Lal is Lt. Commander Data's "daughter", technically speaking. She was created in an attempt for the android to practice Dr. Noonian Soong's profession, creating artificial life, and to see how to become a parent. However, Starfleet took great interest in Lal, and she became very stressed, causing her postronic net to break down. Data was forced to deactivate her in order to keep her from being taken by the Starfleet, and despite Data's best attempts to keep her from shutting down, her neural net broke down completely. Data put her memories into his own brain, so part of her still lives on.
