This is Lucas, from the "Mother" series. Some people do not know, but there are three Mother games. Mother 1, Mother 2 and obviously, Mother 3. However, only Mother 2 was released in America. That title was dubbed over as Earthbound. You can still get Mother 3 and 1, but as a ROM (which I use xD)

Well, I can feel where you're coming from. The Mother series (Earthbound) was indeed an odd platform. But I didn't play it because of that. I played it (and still do) because of the feeling you get when playing the game. Also, because of the nostalgia. However, as I stated before; it is, indeed, an odd platform.
