Piper Lane Dunaway's only memories of her childhood were a house ablaze in the night and a massive batlike abomination murdering her parents and twin brother. The three-year-old girl fled into the woods, where a neighbour briefly took her into shelter before Piper's erratic behaviour led them to enroll her at a nearby orphanage/school for outcast or odd children, known simply as Piper Lane. As the girl had no memory of her real name, age, or nearly anything else about her, the headmistress simply named her after the facility.
Although Piper excelled at her studies, many of the other students avoided her due to her eccentric personality/habits and erratic, increasingly violent mood swings. (She was misdiagnosed with MPD [multiple personality disorder] shortly after; a diagnosis later corrected to be BPD [bipolar disorder].) Often roaming the woods around Piper Lane at night, she formed a strong friendship with Bridget and Wyatt Dolan, and their younger cousin Selah Dunaway. She was such a frequent guest at the Dunaway and Dolan houses that both began to think of her as family, until she ran away from the orphanage to live with the Dunaways at age 10. She was brought back forcefully by the headmistress and several older students who had essentially "ruled the roost" there, although Kevin and Gemma Dunaway had agreed to adopt her. That night, while in a manic stage, she killed everyone at Piper Lane except one, a werewolf/human hybrid named Merry Nadeau.
The crime was never solved and Piper was in fact adopted by the Dunaways. She adored her new sister Selah and thrived in her new environment, going to a regular school and excelling academically and in theatre. Piper's eccentricities (for example, wearing old-fashioned clothes and her excellent acting skills) surprisingly won her a great deal of popularity and attention. On the weekends she, Wyatt Dolan, and Selah would explore the wilds around their homes and small mountain-town. While exploring a cave one day Selah vanished, never to be seen again, although the traumatised Piper claimed to have seen wavering green mists de-materialising her sister and transporting her to an unknown place.
The Dunaways and Dolans reeled through desperate and fruitless searches for Selah and Piper swore revenge on the "entity" responsible for her sister's disappearance. Later, after the Dolans moved to a larger city in North Carolina, Piper (now 18) moved after them; and she, Wyatt, and Bridget banded together secretly to find Selah and finally put their personal terrors and pasts at ease.
(Her story converges in/with roleplays from this point onward.)
