The Vault Dweller is the protagonist you play as in Fallout 1, a 1997 top-down post-apocalyptic RPG based in the year 2161.

After all the years spent in your vault, Vault 13, the overseer tasks you with finding a replacement for the broken water chip needed to supply water to the vault.

After that, you then get tasked to destroy the base of the Mutants that plan on destroying the vault and civilians in it.

You come home victorious but you're greeted by the Overseer with a notice that you've been kicked out.

The Overseer has become aware of the monster you've transformed into by the wasteland and is afraid others from your vault will follow, so you've been banished to the desolate wasteland, left to wonder and ponder as you walk through the endless southern Californian desert and see little of what remains of the pre-war retrofuturism culture based in the 1950s.
