From northern Native American mythology, wendigos were once humans who committed cannibalism to avoid starvation. They are cursed to be ever ravenous, never losing the sharp pain of hunger no matter how much they consume.
Original depictions were a gaunt, corpse-like human, but 20th century horror fiction like Stephen King's "Pet Sematary" inspired today's pop culture to commonly depict them with deer traits. This version includes horse hooves hidden by unkempt fur, a stubby tail, and a partially-uncovered deer skull matched with red, glowing eyes.
Here's a more recent depiction by Itaudia.
