ABOUT PROJECT:

Catholicraft is a modular series of resources in convenient packets to help with development and flexibility with other packs. The way it works is to establish sets of resources - such as record discs, soundtrack music, paintings, environmental textures, and the like. The pack, as the name implies, has a Catholic theme, giving the flavour of traditional Christianity to accentuate the Minecraft experience and give it the overall atmosphere akin to Catholicism, in various ways.

ABOUT PACK:

This pack, Luke, celebrates the Blessed Evangelist and Patron of Painters, with a replacement of all the artwork in the game with artwork and iconography from various catholic sources. Place on top of any other resource packs you may have and you should be good to go! I tried to stick with the theme or some aspect of the original painting when replacing with a Catholic alternative, but some are a bit drawn out, and some simply aren't there. Perhaps I shall update the textures in time, but for now, I'm happy with the project as-is.
Some screenshots of the pictures are displayed in the media gallery, so you can check those out. You can also click the replacement links for a higher resolution for all the icons and art used.

UPDATE: There is now a painting_b folder within assets/minecraft/textures. Switching the painting folder with painting_b gives you the option for a more Eastern icon aesthetic. Enjoy!

SUMMARY OF CONTENT CHANGED:

Old File
Replaced With
Notes
Kebab
Three Holy Hierarchs (Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, and John Chrysostom)The link is in location: kebab comes from the Middle East, as do these holy people.
Aztec
Our Lady of GuadalupeOur Lady of Guadalupe is a purported apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, a pious man living in Mexico around the turn of the Modern era. The link, of course, is in "Aztec", for the Aztecs were an ancient Mesopotamian empire.
Aztec2
Our Lady of Guadalupe
(See above) haven't been able to find the source image again.ó
Alban
Stained glass of St. Alban
Bomb
Stained glass of St. PatrickYou'll have to forgive my English brain here.
Plant
Stained glass of the Garden of EdenBecause, the Garden of Eden had plants. I was kinda reaching for this one.
Wasteland
The Descent of Christ into Limbo
For Hell is a wasteland (and I couldn't find any icons I liked of Christ's temptaion in the Desert, which I thought was more fitting. Ah, but alas.)
Wanderer
The Cross on the Baltic
A painting by the same artist.
Graham
Aethelbehrt of Kent
Linked by their shared royalty, haha. King Aethelbehrt is also a canonised saint, the first English king to convert to Christianity.
Pool
Stained glass of the Baptism of Jesus
Linked by the water in both, and not much else.
Courbet
The Renunciation of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, by James CollinsonAnd this one's only linked vageuly by the two paintings being drawn in the same time period. I couldn't find anything that connected to Courbet, to French hikers, or what have you.
Sunset
A picture of Solemn Easter vespers at the London OratoryVespers is an hour of the Church, traditionally prayed at sunset with the character of rendering thanks to God for the day we have had.
Sea
The cossing of the Red Sea
Connected by the sea, simply.
Creebet
An icon of Moses
The original of this one is a companion piece to Sea, so I thought I'd go with the same theme as Sea but focusing on a different subject.
Match
The events at Pentecost in Acts 2I chose this one because a match lights fires, and "tongues as of fire" descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. I told you a lot of these would be reaching.
Bust
A Byzantine icon of the Roman Emperor Constantine
Connected by them both being Roman Emperors.
Stage
The crucifixion of St. PeterThis painting always looked staged to me, which is why I connected it when I read the filename "stage". That's about it though, no other connection.
Void
The Agony in the GardenThe original image had an Angel at prayer, so I went with that and this mystery is what came to mind.
Burning Skull
One half of this painting
A popular devotion some Catholics have to the "Sacred Heart", which others disavow as being some weird idolatry or separation of Christ into parts, who, being God, has none (something called Divine Simplicity). I don't think I'm portraying the argument against it very well, nor do I particularly like the devotion to the Sacred or Immaculate Hearts. But there's good Biblical basis for it (see Luke 2:34-35, for example), at least in theory: just not my cup of tea. And that's fine; private devotions are not a matter we are bound to adhere to unity on, because this sort of stuff isn't in what we call the Deposit of Faith, which is all that is necessary for salvation. But I digress.
Skull and Roses
The other half of this painting
(see above for a ramble)
Wither
St AgathaThis one I chose for the irony. St Agatha was the first saint found to be incorrupt, that is to say, her body miraculously did not wither away after her martyrdom.
Fighters
St Nicholas punching the heretic at the Council of NiceaYes, the same St. Nicholas. He is remembered for throwing three bags of gold down the chimney of a poor man's house in secret so that they could receive dowries and be preserved from being forced into prostitution. He is similarly remembered for his punching of Arius (or some other heretic) at the Council of Nicea, and his zeal against heresy (though not the manner in which he tackled it) is something to be looked up to.
Skeleton
Nicetas the Confessor
I chose this one purely because the image resolution was right. Nicetas is an Eastern Catholic saint, and they deserve more love.
Donkey Kong
Christ in the DesertThis one bears no relevance to Donkey Kong (which was a hard enough theme to go with as it was), and was requested by a friend, as it is his favourite painting.
Pointer
Michelangelo's depiction of the Creation of Adam
"Pointer" led me to "hand of God" which led me to this cropped painting of the Creation of Adam.
Pigscene
The Lamb of God on the AltarA pig is a domesticated animal these days, and so I drew a connection between lamb and pig - not that that's a very appropriate connection, but I wanted an excuse to this painting.

ABOUT PATRON:

Luke, the writer of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, has been identified with St. Paul's "Luke, the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14). He is considered the patron of painters for his alleged authorship of a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Salus Populi Romani), from whence the tradition of iconography in the Christian Church is said by some to have its source.

It is believed that Luke was born a Greek and a Gentile. Luke's gospel shows special sensitivity to evangelizing Gentiles. It is only in his gospel that we hear the parable of the Good Samaritan, that we hear Jesus praising the faith of Gentiles such as the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian (Luke 4:25-27), and that we hear the story of the one grateful leper who is a Samaritan (Lk.17:11-19). Luke also shows a mastery of Greek not found in the other synoptic Gospels. Furthermore, according to the early Church historian Eusebius, Luke was born in Antioch, in Syria.

Luke was a disciple of Paul and seems to have written both Luke and the Acts of the Apostles during their missionary journeys. Most put the authorship of the Acts of the Apostles before AD 62-64, where Peter and Paul were crucified; this because of the absence of such a momentous event in the history of those Apostles. Luke is also generally esteemed as an historian for the accuracy with which he gives his accounts: many details mentioned by Luke, thought by modern scholars to have been false based on a lack of evidence, have shown remarkable new evidences in newer archaeological digs, giving a lot of credibility to his works and to his message.

Luke also has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially Mary. It seems that Luke knew and used Mary as a source for his Gospel, for it is only in Luke's gospel that we hear such intimate details about the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to mary of the Incarnation of Jesus (including the basis for the prayer, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee... blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.) Luke has always been an extremely esteemed person of significance within the Catholic Church, and his feast day is on October 18.

CREDITS:

I do not claim credit for anything in this pack, nor are any paintings, except for fighters_a.png (which doesn't appear in game unless you replace fighters.png with it), owned by or created by me; I found most of these on sites with Creative Commons licences, but if there are any copyright issues, please let me know and I'll swap them out. To reiterate very carefully though: I do not desire or intend to claim credit for any of the icons or paintings in this pack, excepting the aforementioned fighter image.

You should unpack the .zip folder to its own folder first so you have a folder 'Gallery of Luke' in your resourcepacks folder, and a folder called assets and a pack.png and pack.mcmeta in it. Then just navigate to /assets/minecraft/textures and change the 'painting' folder to 'painting_a' and the 'painting_b' folder to 'painting' (no quotes). Minecraft reads the folder that has the directory assets/minecraft/textures/painting. I hope that helps?
