No one needs to send you png's, png's are the default in the minecraft jar. If they are coming out as png, its because you are using paint.

Actually, the system I use a system that is called "Paintbrush" so does that make any difference?

Never used that, so not sure. If you want to use a free easy program, use gimp. I know for a fact that gimp keeps png files transparent, as they are supposed to be.
