progs running in background, java, lwjgl, driver versions, etc. etc. etc.
From my experience I can tell that 64px packs run acceptably fine, not totaly smooth but definitely fine on dual-cores (AMD or Intel doesn't matter) with Short and/or Normal view distance
It also depends on the contents of the pack... ie. Misa's Realistic pack is more performance demanding as other ones, due to the many amazing features it has implied (like animated textures, etc.)
