Hello!
In this blog I'll show the ones of you who are willing to make an epic server how to!
intro:
This blog will have a few sections: Hosted server v.s. Home servers, Plugins (will be divided to: anti Griefing / hacking plugins, helpful plugins and fun plugins) and Helpful tips & advises.
I decided to make this blog because I know it's hard to find the plugins for your server, and it takes time and work to become a good admin / staff member.
I was (and am) the owner of both kinds of servers: hosted, and none-hosted (home servers). I also have experience with hamachi.
If you have ANY question about servers just ask, I'll be glad to help.
So... let's get started!
Note: This tutorials is about bukkit servers
First of all.. Home server or a hosted server?!?
I hosted a server at my own home for a few months, and let's be honest... hosting a server at your own home sucks.
Even though hosting a server at home is free, and simple, hosting a server on the internet is much better , because of a few reasons:
o It's 24/7
o It mostly has no lag, when many home hosted servers do.
o You don't have a RAM limit (of course you might have because of the price, but that's not the point)
o On most panels the software updates automatically.
o No port forwarding needed
Of course if you don't have the money to buy a server, you don't have to, but it's better.
Useful plugins for your server:
In this section I will name many plugins that help can help your server a lot. (Some plugins will be different than many other blogs / posts, as I don't want to repeat them again for the 100th time)
Anti Hacking / Griefing plugins:
3rd best anti grief plugin: LogBlock
Yea. the famous plugin LogBlock. This plugin logs every block a player blocks or places. Of course it also logs fire ignition and creeper / TNT explosions. If it's that good why is it in 3rd place, you ask? Well, because it required a MySQL server. I don't understand in these stuff, but I tried to set up one, and it was very hard for me.
Grade: 8/10
2nd best anti grief plugin: VanishNoPacket
Invisibility potions? that's cute. With this plugin you can vanish yourself. nobody (but those who have the permission) can see you, not even with /list. you're like not on the server. You could spy on everyone, and easily detect if they are griefers.
Grade: 9/10
1st best anti grief plugin: GriefLog
It not a very famous plugin, but it's the best in my opinion. It acts just like LogBlock, but doesn't require any MySQL servers. You can just grab a piece of water (id: 8), right click the block you'd like to check, and walla! you found the griefer.
Grade: 10/10
3rd best anti hack plugin: Anticheat
Anticheat. As the title says it prevents cheaters. It fixes all the exploits and hacks on your server, and no one can hack. it also tells you when a player hacks and what did he do. Sounds awesome, right? Well nope. There are many complaints about players using FastBreak and FastPlace when they actually don't. AntiCheat even can kick them and ban them, for nothing!
Grade: 7/10
2nd best anti hack plugin: NoCheatPlus
Let's look at the title: NoCheat, which is a famous plugin (inactive), with a +, and that's exactly what it does. It prevents your server from hackers, cheaters and other stuff. It blocks all of the known hacks in the game, and if a new one comes out you can trust the authors to update it ASAP. It's similar to AntiCheat, but it doesn't have the fake hacking thing. Only problem: to make it compatible with your server you'll probably have to install another plugin: ncpc (NoCheatPlusCompact).
Grade: 9/10

"The best way to fight fire is with fire."
the best way to fight hacks is... Hacks.
That's right, hacks.
Nodus:
For the few players who don't know, nodus is a hacking client. In fact it is the most popular one. If you have it you can learn all the hacks, and know exactly when a player hacks, and how. It also helps you building things (Autosign, Build, and more). I highly recommend using it, and if you want you can always disable it.
Grade: 10/10
Of course those plugins are the best in my opinion. If you think differently, or you want to see a plugin on the list please tell me :)
Tips and Advises:
Here are some tips I found and made during begin an admin:
o Don't be lazy
o Protect things before you build them, because you might forget and your stuff will get griefed.
o NEVER leave an offline server without an authentication plugin (I.E. xAuth)
o If a player (mostly new ones) is extremely quiet, teleport to him. there will be a good chance he's griefing or hacking, and if he doesn't, nothing bad happens.
o When advertising a server try to make the post as good as possible. If you make just a post saying: hey check out my server ip: XXXX nobody will actually find it interesting and you'll have no players. explain what plugins you have, your ranks and things like this.

There is a big debate: LWC or Lockette?
I personally like LWC better.
It uses commands, and not signs. It isn't that much of a difference, but I personally prefer commands.
It also locks your things automatically, so if you forget to you won't get raided, and your belongings will stay until you come back. Of course if you prefer Lockette, go ahead and use it, as there is no big difference between the two.
Grade: 8/10
2nd best useful plugin: WorldEdit
WorldEdit is one of the most popular plugins on bukkit. Why is that? it's effective, efficient, basiclly, amazing. You can create mountains, make a flower field, and build enormous things in just one minute. It might be a bit hard at the start, but once you get the idea you start loving the plugin and getting addicted to it. Recently it also added a skull feature: you can make custom player's skulls with just one commands.
Grade: 9/10
1st best useful plugin: Essentials
Essentials. They are a must - have, no doubt. With Essentials you can get a better server experience, make jails, set a new spawn, or make rules available to be seen from everywhere! It adds about 150+ more commands to your server.
Ever happend to set your home (/sethome) on a server? or when somebody logs in it says: "Player X comes from Y"? or many more things... that's essentials.
Grade: 10/10

SuperPotions
Did you know there are alot of potion effects you can't get in vanilla minecraft? that's what this plugin is for.
With one simple command you can give yourself or any other player a custom potion effect with whatever level and duration you'd like.
One epic thing you can do with it is give yourself 15 block jump and speed 15, and then run around jumping and running.
Or, if you're a troll, you could give someone slowness 50, and look at them rage.
Grade: 9/10
Factions
Factions. all of you probably already know of it, but I'll still explain about it:
This plugin basically adds factions to the game. Invite some friends, make a faction, add allies, kill foes, claim land, build your dream base! all in one plugin.
Grade: 10/10
Bending
Water, Fire, Earth, Air. If you ever saw The Last Airbender or The Legend Of Korra you'll know what I'm talking about. This plugin adds all kinds of bending to your server, and from my experience, it's EPIC! you can make a water bubble underwater and breath forever, make a tornado, raise up earth from the ground, or light your enemies on fire.
Grade: 10/10

about the bending plugin... I'm not sure. I know I played on my server with it when on minecraft 1.3, with no lag.. but on later versions on minecraft I did notice it crashes and lags alot. (Do note, "by "later" I mean minecraft 1.4~, not 1.6 if there is even a version for it).
