"Gnnr.. Damn. It busted." Steve wiped his brow quickly, heaving the shards of the iron pickaxe at the stone walls. The sound echoed emptily across the cave, returning moans of lost zombies and the clunks of heavy bone feet. His spine chilled, unready for battle. Turning on his heels, ahead was only the sights of beastly creepers and arachnids prepped to lunge.

He dropped down behind a boulder, grudgingly trying to push it ahead of him. The thought was late as an arrow struck his shoulder. Yelps of pain filled the silence apart from the throb sound he heard pounding in his ears. Thoughts raced, I'm a fool for going so unprepared.. I'm so alone.. How do I fight back..? These moments hadn't lasted for a moment before he snapped back up.

He once more heaved his fists at the boulder, trying hopelessly to shove it forewards. Another arrow landed in his lower leg, making him fall meekly. "G-Gah.." His glance had gone to fuzz at the continuous jabs of painful arrows inflicted. Blood was seeping through as it had many a time, but this was heavy. Memories buzzed softly through his mind.

Years ago...

"Mommy, mommy, can I go with him? Please? Pleeaase?" The woman above the small child smiled warmly, ruffling his hair. The lady's hair fell down her shoulder, with her green shirt with the fitted green belt shifting barely. "Ask him yourself, Steve." She winked, stepping aside to show the large, burly figure of a man with a crooked grin, staring down the child.

The red shirt seemed dirtier than when Steve had last seen him. The child wrapped her arms around his chest quickly. "Daddy! Daddy, you're home!" He lifted his arms, and giggled innocently at his mine-dusty arms. "Can I go with you today?" His father gave him a saddened smile, and knelt down. "Me and your mom need to talk about this for a bit, you know how she is." They chanted together, "Alex, Alex, always worrying."

She chuckled, gripping the man's hand and dragging him off. In their room, he looked at her dearly. "The rest of the village fled to the waters.. When will we tell him?" His voice was tired.

"The waters? What do you mean?"

"They left today, said they were going to find somewhere better. Something about guardians.. The guys down the mine spoke of it."

Her eyes widened. "No, no! They can't.. Not the.. The guardians are monstrous! They're.. They're.. No!"

"What.. What are you fretting about?"

"They murdered my family. We have to help them! If they die it'll be just us, the flood will get to the other villages! What if.. What if we're the last?"

"Don't be silly, Alexandria. We need to protect Steve, to stay here and-"

"He can come too.. Or we can go without him."

His eyes widened too, fearful. "Leave him?! He's a child!"

The arguement ended abruptly after, and his mother and father looked over Steve, sleeping soundly. His hand wrapped around hers.

"I'll meet you at the stronghold.. There are probably others hiding out there. Any word from the safety villages? Or the temples? People may be there, as well.."

His father looked at her, and he blinked back tears, the bright white of his eyes reflecting sadly. They both laid a small basket by his bed, and exited the house swiftly.

The memory as well had gone in mere seconds, as the crushing sound of swordclash and fallen bodies shrouded all. A sizzling sound fell before him, and his wounds dissipated in a pinkish glow. The haze dispersed in his eyes, and his eyes followed up the deep gray boots, to the brown pants, and up to the familiar seagreen shirt and deep green belt. His eyes stopped at her face, young with bright green eyes in the torchlight of her flickering wooden torch.

She held out her skinny but strong arms, smiling brightly. He stood abruptly, looking at her grass-colored eyes. He blinked wildly, gripping her hand. "What is your name?" He spoke suddenly, without thought.

She replied with a smirk, "Alex. And, I'm looking for a basket?"
