At times we as people feel the need to add additional meaning to things, whether it be in an attempt to answer questions, stimulate excitement or create mystery and wonder.
Adding meaning to things is in no way bad, unless of course this added meaning detracts from the original value of the topic in question.
In this example I will use Minecraft (fitting, I know).
I have been running a server for nearly 5 months and playing Minecraft for well over 12 months. From the instant I began playing it intrigued me and made me look at games in an entirely different light. Games are often criticized when they lack elements of story and motive, but with Minecraft it was the complete oposite, the lack of story meant you could create your own or simply leave it as a mystery and the lack of motive meant I could develop my own, no more developers or NPC's telling me what I could and couldn't do.
This world of Minecraft consumed me more than any other game I had ever played, I know that at times I can be obsessive but Minecraft took it to a whole new level, I wasn't just obsessed, I was engulfed and overwhelmed by the possibilities that were at my fingertips. This new found obsession eventually found its way into developing a server and building a strong community around it, one that I hold very dear and love very much. But, as the months have passed I have noticed a trend that new players bring to the table, not all of them, but most. They want Creative mode, they want promotions, they want World Edit, they want OP and they want everything else that can be possibly given. And they want it all with minimal work involved.
Ranks, World Edit, OP. Just a few of the things that are necessary evils for a server to run effectively. These "added meanings" detract from what Minecraft really is.
You, a block and a world of possibility.
The World is your canvas and the block is your brush. You don't "need" creative mode to build your house, you don't "need" that promotion to have a good time and just enjoy yourself. If you see these things as being needed, then I fear you may have forgotten what makes Minecraft, Minecraft.
Don't forget what makes this game great. It is not the additions that I and other server owners give it, it is the creative freedom that is un-paralleled by anything else.
