So you want to make skins eh? Well you have come to the right place! Saddle up and get ready.

Section 1: Software.

To make skins you need software. A program that you can edit skins with. You can use photo shop if you have it, or a free program called gimp.

Whats easiest is to download programs out there made for making skins. Some of these are MCskinedit3D MCskinedit Miners need cool shoes, Novaskin, skinedit and many more.

I use MCskinedit. It is great for beginners and experts alike.

Section 2: Starting your skin.

Now that you have the software, time to start your skin!

Each area is marked for what part of the body you will be skinning.

Begin by filling in each area with what color you want the skin to be.
Add the basic face, hair and other features.
Add any other features needed.
Polish it up!
Your done!

Section 3: Shading

Now that you have made the skin time to make it look good.

Shading is changing the colors slightly to darken or lighten them.

So lets start shading. Take the base color of the body part on the skin and lighten it or darken it. then take the color and make a strip on the top/bottom of the skin. Take that color and lighten/darken it and make another strip next to the one you already made. Repeat this process until you have shaded the whole skin.

There you go! repeat this process to the rest of the skin.
After that I add some noise. Noise is a feature in MCskinEdit. It is probably in other editors too.
Noise "Ruffs" up the skin by slightly changing the shade of colors. This is a great blending tool. I use a force of around 15-20.

After shading I usually add noise. It blends the shading together and makes things nice.

Note. Don't go overboard with noise. To much noise can RUIN a skin! Noise should not be used instead of shading. I only use it to blend my skins.

Section 4: advanced shading.

Advanced shading is simple!

Simply shade certain parts lighter or darker. Like say under the head or legs. Or around certain areas to make it look light is hitting it.

Section 5: faces.

Skinning faces can be difficult. The face of a skin shouldn't be Two black dots and a flat black line.

Instead try and and do realistic eyes by adding whites and colored pupils. If you have seen skins with "moving eyes" this is done by making the head a hat and have holes with the pupils on the actual head.

Mouths don't need to be black lines. They can be dark skin colored. A mouth can be many different shapes, to make a smile, frown ect.

Try to make a mouth that complements the face.

Noses. A nose is difficult. it primarily should be a darker bit of skin under the eyes. Use your imagination.

Section 6: Hats.

So you need a hat. Well good. Hats spice up every skin. Though a hat may not even be a "Hat" it could be hair, hoods, helmets, and much more.

Hats can be used to make a face 3D. Like for moving mouths or eyes. (See moving eyes above)

A hat can only go 1 pixel above the head, and 1 pixel out.

Be creative!

Section 7: Choosing colors.

When choosing colors for a skin careful consideration should be taken. If you are making a happy/cheerful skin use brighter colors. If you are making a darker, sadder sinister skin, use dark colors.

Don't use colors that are too bright. When in doubt add saturation to mellow a color out a bit. (saturation is how grey a color is. The more saturation the grayer the color. Most editors have a saturation bar)

Use colors that complement the rest of the skin and each other. Try and get a feel for what you are trying to make and choose colors accordingly.

Well that about covers everything!

Saturation is the exact opposite of what you said it was -_- Saturation is how BRIGHT the color is. I just had to point that out before we all got stupid...

There is nothing wrong with using that software so long as you don't use any of the premade parts
