Hello! I've had a lot of people asking me how I made the transparent skins I've been making, so here's a guide to doing just that! I apologize in advance for the watermark on the gifs.
First, of course, you make a skin. You may use any desired editor, but I personally used the skindex one. For the part you want translucent, color it a color that you didn't use for the rest of the skin. I usually use bright greens and oranges. When you have this, download the skin.
Open the skin using gimp. Here is a link to download said website.
Now, make a new layer. Make sure it is transparent!
Now, color on the newly made layer with the desired color. This is the color that you want to be translucent, if you haven't already caught on. Make sure your brush is at 1 pixel, and do not shade on the new layer (the shading will show through from the rest of your skin).
Now, edit the layer that you have colored on. Change it's opacity to a desired number. I usually use 64 for my skins (you can see what that looks like here and here).
Now, you need to erase the base colors (the bright colors that we previously traced). Make sure you select the 'hard edge' option on the eraser and erase on the correct layer (this being the original, bottom one)
Now, you're finished! Just export the file from gimp and use it as you please! (Note: export them, don't save).
Now that you're done, I want to give you a word of warning
You can NOT make the base layer of your skins translucent / transparent. It only works on the over layer
These skins won't work on every version. I think it is anything above 1.8, but don't bet on it.
If there are any issues with this tutorial, I apologize. I made this in class.
If you have any more questions or concerns, just leave a comment!
