Editing Skills
You must have good editing skills and not have long and boring pauses where nothing is happening in game.
Personal Trait
Viewers love personal traits. Here are some examples:
Ragegamingvideos - "Timothy" and "Foreign"
Skydoesminecraft - "Butter"
Pewdiepie - "Barrels"
Entertaining
No long pauses of nothing, and has to be funny OR something else like expert at something (e.g. Sethbling [not saying he isn't funny, just an example])
The Basic Needs
Unless there is a good reason that your content doesn't have voice, you should always have a microphone. You also need a good capturer without any lag or watermark. This also means you need a good computer.
The More Than Basic Needs
If you can have a good headset, and good mic it's even better.
Consistant
Don't have random months of no videos than two weeks of lots of videos. If you have to, refer to next part.
Make Sure the Audience is Up to Date
Tell the audience what videos are coming (unless they're secret! :D) and make sure they know if you won't be making videos for a while and why.
Listening to the Audience
If the viewers want you to use an HD texture pack, and enough of them do, then do! (Take note that you shouldn't give them all the power, of they'll end up taking over your channel)
You Can't Be Young
I know it's hard, but unless you are REALLY good at all the other criteria like ACtennisAC, you can't be young or you'll get lots of hate, sadly.

Keep talking! Talk like theres no tomorrow! Yell things out! Talk about your failures! Blame Timothy for everything! If you want a good example watch Ragegamingvideos channel, hes less popular then sky etc but far more engaging and actually makes you want to sit through 2 minute long intros!
Also, if you're younger then 15 you may want to wait. No one listens to those. I mean, I try to give them a shot but even I've given up on them, the vast majority say 5 words per video -.-. Makes it kinda unfair on the rest.
