Now, I know a lot of you are experienced minecrafters, and will probably know most to all of this stuff. However, this tutorial is for complete beginners. If you are new to minecraft, you should probably sit down and read. Now, there are many different aspects of minecraft, and today I am only teaching the basics. I plan on releasing further guides with more information later. But first, lets start with just basic minecraft things. First, you should probably know some vocabulary:
World - A world is the map the a player plays on. If you have a map for survival, then you have a survival world
Seed - The seed is something you can type in the seed box when creating your world. The seed is te structure of the world, and each world has its own individual seed. It is optional that you type this in. If it is left blank, then minecraft will randomly generate one for you.
Item - An item is something in game that you can hold, but, most of the time, can not place. However, most items are used to craft, such as sticks, coal, wood, things like that. Some items have uses, such as swords, that do more damage when you hit things. Shovels, that you can dig with. Redstone, that you can place and sed power through it. Things like that.
Crafting - Crafting is either done in a 3x3 crafting table, or in your 2x2 crafting space in your inventory. Each item has a different crafting recipe. No 2 have the same. However, not all things in minecraft have a crafting recepe. You can not craft things like dirt, and water. You can craft things such as Pickaxes, and Wood Planks. Each recipe requires different items and different amounts of items.
Mobs - Mob means "Mobile". Mobs are the creatures that make up minecraft. Things like sheep, wolves, and the ever popular creeper are al mobs. I will explain more about mobs in a different tutorial.
Mining - Mining is when you go underground and look for things, such as minerals. Pretty much like real life.
Blocks - Blocks make up the world of minecraft. Everything that is not a mob in minecraft, is a block. There is so much about blocks, and so many different kinds, but to keep it simple, lets just say blocks are just about what minecraft is. Basically, no blocks, no minecraft.
Mod - A mod is a modification to minecraft. There are a lot of mods to choose from, that is, if you want one. I wouldn't worry about that right away, though.
Texture pack - A texture pack is the way the game looks. You can change the look of the game by getting or making your own texture pack. Texture packs are a whole new topic, so im not going to get into those right now.
Skin - A skin is how your player looks in minecraft. Without a skin, you are the default steve. Skins show people who you are. The important thing when finding or making a skin is to find or make one YOU like. Forget everyone else. Its your skin. Do it how you want to (Basic principle of minecraft, too!).

Ok, now that you know some basic minecraft vocabulary, its time to teach you about some of the basic blocks in minecraft. As I said, minecraft is build on, and with, blocks. Here are some basic block that you should know:
dirtpnggrasspng
Dirt: Dirt is the most basic blok in minecraft. That is what the brown stuff you se on te surface when you create your world. If there is green on it, it is a grass block, like shown next to the dirt. These are probably the 2 of the most common blocks in minecraft. You only need your fist to collect dirt, but you need a tool (best if its a shovel) to collect grass blocks. Otherwise, it turns into dirt.
Stonepng
Stone: The underground of minecraft is filled with stone. That is probably the sole block most common in minecraft. You will probably encounter stone a lot. You need a Wooden Pickaxe to mine stone. Otherwise, you get nothing.

The ores: The ores in minecraft are the thing most people strive for. Ores make survival mode worthwhile, and mining very rewarding. Each one of the pictures above is an ore. I will explain what each one of them is. It is vital minecraft knowledge. The black one first in the lineup is coal. Coal is very valuable. Coal is the basic but very useful smelting tool. If you put coal in a fernace, it will smelt 8 items per coal (I will explain more about smelting at another time). It is also used for the ever valuable torches. Torches are used to light up the are you are in. The more light, the less of a chance monsters have to spawn. You need a wooden pickaxe or better to mine coal. The second one in the lineup, next to coal, is iron. Iron is used for a multitude of things, such as tools. Iron ore actually drops the ore block, unlike most other ores. Iron has so many uses. It is a very useful item in minecraft. You need a stone pickaxe or better to mine iron The gold one next to iron is, you guessed it: Gold! Gold does not have many uses. It an be used in tools and armor, but golden tools and armor are not very sturdy, and will break quickly. The armor will protect you well, and the tools are efficient, but I would recomend just holding out with iron until you find diamonds. Gold is not completely useless, though. It can be used to make clock that tell you where the sun and moon are in the sky. It can also be used to make golden blocks, a very decorative and expensive block. Also, it can be turned into gold nuggets, which has other uses. You need a iron pickaxe or better to mine gold. The red one next to gold is something called redstone. Redstone is used to power things. It can not be made into armor and tools Redstone is complicated to learn, especially for a beginner, so I will just make it simple: Redstone sends electrical currents through it to power other things, but it must be powered first by something such as a pressure plate or a lever. You need an iron pickaxe or beter to mine redstone. The weird, blue one on the bottom is Lapis Lazuli, Lapis, for short. Lapis is solely for decoration and dyes. It can not be made into armor and tools, like redstone. It can not be used to power things. However, if you want some expensive blue blocks in your house, or you want to make a sheep blue, lapis is what you want. You need an iron pickaxe r beter to mine lapis lazuli. The light blue one next to the lapis is the most strived for thing in minecraft: Diamonds. Diamonds make the strongest armor and tools. They are the most expensive item. They are also used to make enchanting tables, which I will explain at a different time. Diamonds are incredibly rare. Never pass up diamonds. You need an iron pickaxe or better to mine diamonds. The last one next to the diamond is emerald. Emerald ore has not been released yet. It will be released in minecraft 1.3 premium. They will be used as currency to trade with villagers, which will also be released in 1.3. You will not ba able to make armor and tools out of emeralds. You will need an iron pickaxe or better to mine emeralds.
minecraft----released-gives-you-new-w
Wood and wood planks: Wood and wood planks are the first things you should get in minecraft. There are different types of wood in minecraft. The wood is on the top layer of the picture, and wood planks are on the bottom. Diagonally left to the wood is the type of wood planks that that type of wood creates. Starting from the left, the different types of wood are pine, oak, birch, and jungle. You do not need an axe to collect wood, you only need your fist. An axe will make it go faster, though.

Now that you know some minecraft vocabulary and the basic blocks, you can go out and enjoy minecraft a little better. I will be making more tutorials about the basics of minecraft as time comes. But that is all for now. Happy mining!
