I found an easy way to optimize your Minecraft. I went from 50-70fps to 90-130fps.
*Before you begin, please note that 32-bit USERS CANNOT DO THIS*
First things first, download the 64-bit JRE from here--->
(Select the download that applies to your computer)
Windows x64 (64-bit)20.48 MB jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe
or:
Linux x64 (64-bit)20.3 MB jre-7u3-linux-x64.rpm
Download and install.
Now, go to 'Control Panel' on your computer and go to 'Uninstall a program'. Find Java.
You may have multiple Java's e.g. Java(TM) 7 Update 3
Delete them, and only leave the new 64-Bit version, and Java FX (if you have it) (http://imgur.com/uJR6o)
Run Minecraft, and Viola, you have an FPS boost.

I wouldn't recommend uninstalling Java 6 though, unless you have a 64-bit web browser. I find that my system will automatically prefer the 64-bit jre7 over the 32-bit jre6 when running Minecraft or other desktop Java applications.
For Linux, if you run a distribution that does not use .rpm files (e.g. Ubuntu) you will need to download the .tar.gz version. I recommend installing it under /opt.
