Hey Guys!
It's Cat, and welcome to my skin tutorial!
Since many of you don't know how to make skins,
This is the blog for you!
First, you will need an art program. It is very important that the program you use can handle transparency, if it can't handle transparency, the skin may have spots of white or black where
it is supposed to be clear. You can see if your program can handle transparency if you see and
grey or grey/white checkerboard when you import the skin file. I use GIMP, it is a free photo
editing program and in my opinion it's very good. Programs that are more expensive like Photoshop
work just as well if not better.
When you start making your skin, you must import a file of a skin as a template to draw over
You can download templates from different websites, or you could just use the default Steve skin:
http://minecraft.net/images/char.png . Simply import the file into the art program.
When you are editing the skin, the file for the default skin is very small, only 64x32 pixels. You have
to zoom in to edit the skin, DO NOT make the image larger, it will just make the pixels blurry and you
won't be able to upload it to Minecraft.
So on to actually making the skin. My best advice is just to be creative and practice. You can't just read a blog and then make the world's best skin on your first try. Don't worry if your first try is bad, you'll get better over time. But to get started, the tools I use are the pencil, brush, eraser, blend and select, but there are so many more that you could use. I don't recommend using the blur or smudge tools, they take away the opacity and eventually just erase the image the more you blend. To blend colors together, I like to use the brush tool with the opacity turned down and the color set to one of the colors you want to blend together. One major thing to keep in mind is to shade your skins, by that I mean that you should add a slightly darker and/or lighter shades of the color you are using instead of making it just a solid color, it will make a huge difference and make your skin look so much better and so much more professional.
Another big tip is about the colors, the colors you use can't all stand out and pop, for example like if you used
all neon colors, it will just make the skin hard on the eyes and ugly. Instead use colors that compliment each
other, or mostly "normal" colors and a 1-2 colors that stand out. If the skin is all "normal" or dull colors it will
still look good. Another thing to note is that the skin won't look as good if there is too much of one color,
try to add contrast but not too much.
When you're done editing your skin file, if it is not a PNG image already ( which it should be ) be sure to save it as a PNG or else you will not be able to upload it.
I hope you guys enjoyed my tutorial and found it helpful.
See you guys next time!
