It is good that you take the fact that you are working on a three-dimensional model into account, so few do.
It's also nice to see that you don't just add a layer shading over the skin with an utter disregard for depth and texture.

The popular methods can be terrible things to behold, with a blotch on every surface, resulting in every corner having a couple of sharp, dark pixels or with a gradient of shading glossing over the skin in it's entirety, giving the impression of an HD "simple" skin.
Lighting doesn't work like that, if an object is illuminated from every side with such brightness, there would be no shadows, at least, not where they usually end up on the skin.
People wouldn't do that in a texture pack for these and more reasons besides, yet when skins are the subject, they go ahead and do it anyway.
People sadly tend to shade, not to make a skin look better, but simply shade for the sake of shading alone.

There is a distinct visual difference in a skin with smooth textures and one with a large amount of noise present.
A lot of shaded skins either make smooth that which should be a bit noisy or make noisy what should've been smooth. Often both.

My advice to would-be shaders is to make two versions, one unshaded, one shaded.
See which one you like best and then, just to be sure, make one that would occupy the space in-between the two versions before choosing one as the final product.

Click the image (for it is one), then right-click the result and select "View image", that should do the trick.

Awesome tutorial! But I have switched to a more popular style of shading, which you can see on my profile.

Thank You Sneez for this tutorial i have been waiting for someone to tell me the areas of highlight and shadows i think your the first one. But i think you should go back to using Gimp for shading because the shading in gimp is so much better. No offense but the skin with MCskinedit3D the legs looked horrible i made a better skin in gimp with this tutorial. Im not trying to hate, just Offer a suggestion

1) Multiple people have asked that, look at recent comments.
2) Don't you want to be original?

1) This isn't your skin why are you answering comments this isn't you topic?
2) Some people don't care that other people are wearing the same skin as they are.
3) Some people just want to wear it because its a cool skin.

Good tut' but I have few questions, I hope it won't be too much personnal :
Do you use the "Dodge/Burn" tool or the "Darken/Lighten" tool for shading ?
Do you begin your skin with a darkest color and then bright it or the opposite ? ;)

I use pencil tool with opacity, for every shade, it turns a bit more purple, you might notice it on some of my skins.
