The Problem with Big Servers: A Newb's Perspective
By: BattlingApollo
When you first started playing Minecraft, you probably first did single player. You played survival, and mined about every single diamond. Then you got into creative along the way and started playing around. Next, you get bored. You probably heard of a wonderful thing called "servers" where you can with actually play with more people than yourself and annoying creepers! Wow! The first thing you probably did was go on Google, and search up "minecraft servers". Then you would hit "Minecraft Servers.net". Next, you would grab the first server on the list's IP, and quickly log on.
Now, when you first logged on, you knew nothing. You knew nothing about Bukkit, plugins, commands, vanilla, PvP, etc. Now think of it, the servers that fill up the top ranks on server listing sites are there huge ones. They all have a similar system, a massive amount of slots, huge numbers of people on daily, lots of community, a website, and this thing where you have to sign up on a website to get a rank and blah blah blah. They also usually have something like... 50+ plugins? Now, plugins are very fun, but all those plugins, combined with all the other stuff (such as very complicated spawns) would rapidly overwhelm the newb. All they want to do is have some fun playing Minecraft with other people. But with all this stuff, they feel confused and lonely. When I first went onto a server, I couldn't even get out of the spawn! I walked for ages and did not find a single entrance to the wilderness. This doesn't mean you can't have fun on big servers, if you didn't have fun on them then they wouldn't be popular. But from a newb's perspective, big servers intimidate them. And PvP servers, they have A LOT to learn... (griefing, raiding, wars, factions, how to build a house that won't get griefed in 5 seconds, etc). Also, on griefing servers that are popular, just take a look outside of the spawn. The second you step into the wilderness is similar to what you see after a nuclear explosion, seriously! My conclusion is that newbs are better off on small servers, where things are simple and friendly.
