As they came to another tunnel, they saw the familiar green light! They raced towards the light as fast as their legs would carry them. Oliver reached for the ladder and scurried up it with immense speed. Once at the top, he spun around with a hand stretched out. Jewel took hold and Oliver quickly heaved her up. She slammed the trapdoor shut, and they both collapsed to the ground. They were safe at last. “Well, that was an adventure!” Oliver said through his hard breathing. “It sure was!” Jewel agreed.

They both turned towards the stone that opened the trap door. Its magical glow had faded. Jewel stumbled over to the stone and tried to pull it out, but it was stuck. She tried again, but still no luck. As she sat back down, the stone lurched into the air, its magical glow returning. Particles of what looked like metallic sparks surrounded it, and the particles began to form around it. The stone was encircled by gold. It had morphed into a medallion! When Oliver reached out to grab the medallion they both were engulfed by a blinding light.

Jewel abruptly woke up, the air smelt salty, and she was alarmed by unfamiliar surroundings. She looked to her left and found Oliver unconscious on the ground, Jewel rushed over to him and fiercely tried to wake him up. Jewel cried “Oliver, are you okay? Oliver! Oliver!” Oliver lurched upward and exclaimed, “Help, I see a light at the end of the tunnel” Jewel sighed “Don’t be so dramatic.”

Oliver looked around and questioned, “Where are we?” He looked down at his watch; his face went pale. It read April 14, 1912. Jewel helped Oliver to his feet. He told her what his watch said. Jewel screamed with terror. They realized that they were on an exceptionally large ship. Oliver looked over the side of the railing and saw words written on its aft. They read, “Titanic”. Oliver turned to Jewel and said, “We’re on the Titanic!”

Jewel fainted. Oliver ran and caught her. She quickly came back to, and asked him, “What did you say the date was?”

“It is April 14, 1912, why?” Oliver replied. “The Titanic will hit an iceberg tomorrow!” Oliver’s blood ran cold, the thought of drowning made him nauseous. He noticed the medallion was around his neck. They realized that there were hundreds of people around them, they all spoke with British accents. Oliver turned back to Jewel and saw that she was walking away! Oliver ran after her. “Where are you going?’ Oliver questioned.

“I’m finding a way off this ship! I don’t want to die from an iceberg!” Jewel blurted.

They were in the main part of the ship; its interior was decorated with beautiful artwork and lavish details. People all around were wearing long gowns and formal attire, smiling, and talking about their excitement to be on R.M.S Titanic. Their excitement wouldn’t last for long though. Soon the ship would hit an iceberg and sink, and 1,500 people would lose their lives tomorrow. Jewel shuddered at the thought of losing her own life, she had to find a way back home.

Jewel babbled, “We have to find a way back home before it’s too late! Can’t we just tell people they’re about to die and that they should turn the ship around!” “I’m pretty sure they won’t believe two deranged kids.” Oliver answered. She sighed, “You’re right, they’d never listen. They do call this the ‘Unsinkable Ship’ here.” “What I want to know is how we even got here in the first place.” “I think the stone brought us here!” “You’re right. Now we need to-” Oliver was interrupted by a man who looked like one of the crewmates. “Can I help you two? Where are your parents?” The crewmate asked them. Oliver lied, “Oh, well um, we’re staying in 3rd class… they should be down there.” The crewmatenodded and said under his breath, “That explains the clothing…” he then went on his way. “That was close.” Oliver took a sigh of relief. “Yes, it was,” Jewel agreed.

Jewel and Oliver began to hear beautiful music. The distinct sound of the violin, piano, and harp could be heard. People were gathering around the musicians in a large room. They decided to follow the crowd. As they walked on, they became separated. Jewel spun around but couldn’t find Oliver. She called out, “Oliver! Where are you?!”

Jewel frantically spun around and continued shouting. Oliver noticed that Jewel was gone. He too was shouting her name. His voice could not be heard over the loud chattering of the crowd. He went back outside and ran along the ship’s balcony. While running, he kept his eyes peeled for any clues of where Jewel might have gone. He shouted out again, “Jewel!” no luck. A young girl noticed Oliver’s hollering and confronted him. “Are you lost?” She asked him. “I’m just looking for a friend.” He told her. “I see, well this is quite a large ship, could I help you in any way? My name is Flora, by the way.” He nodded and shook her hand. “I would appreciate the help.” She waited for Oliver to introduce himself, but he didn’t.

Jewel looked around and still found herself troubled in the unfamiliar surroundings. Her worst nightmare was unfolding, was she lost on the Titanic? She didn’t have time to question. She had to find Oliver before it was too late. Flora and Oliver were searching near the back of the ship. Oliver shouted, “Jewel! You made me worried sick, are you okay?” “Yes, I thought I was lost forever.” Jewel said in an exasperated tone. Oliver responded, “This is Flora, she helped me search for you.” Flora asked, “What class are you in?” Oliver discreetly nudged Jewel with his elbow. Jewel said hesitantly, “W-we are in third.” Flora was in first class. “Would you like to join me for dinner?” Flora offered. “We would love to, but….” Jewel was cut short by Flora, “Great! Follow me.”

The three kids walked along the ship’s balcony in silence. The sunset was filled with the warmest of colors. The air was cool and refreshing, and the water was calm. Musicians were playing a soft slow tune.

Friends are there in good or bad,

They put a smile on your face.

They are there to help when sad,

And in your heart is a special place.

They do what they know is right,

Even when no one is in sight.

Caring for one another,

Like a good mother.

No matter where,

Friends are always there.

The salty waves crashed up against the haul of the ship, rocking it ever so slightly. They sauntered down a large flight of stairs. As soon as they reached the bottom. Jewel and Oliver were astonished by the massive dining room. Ornately carved tables littered the area, and thousands of exquisitely dressed people flooded the room, preparing for supper. They took a seat at one of the tables where Flora’s family sat. “We were beginning to worry about you.” Her mother exclaimed. Flora replied, “Pardon my unacceptable behavior, it won’t happen again.” “Thank you for your apology, who are your friends?” Flora introduced the two of them “This is Jewel, and Oliver, they are from America.” “We are delighted to meet you! How thoughtful of you to invite your friends to dine with us on this fine evening.” Her father announced.

The scent of warm and delicious food filled the room and made Oliver’s stomach growl uncontrollably. He decided to take a peek at the menu that was lying on the table in front of him. Its contents were filled with gourmet meals, drinks, desserts, and so much more. Oliver suddenly feeling embarrassed, as he read through the menu, its pages were divided into three sections, First class, second class, and third class. He had forgotten to ask if they’d pay for his and Jewel’s meal. Thankfully before Oliver was about to ask, Flora’s parents offered to pay for the meal.

As Oliver examined the pages of the menu. Once again, his attention came to a stop as their waitress walked up to the table with a silver platter with water for everyone. Flora’s parents smiled and greeted the waitress. She then placed a glass of water in front of everyone at the table. Jewel ordered Grilled mutton chops and baked jacket potatoes. Oliver’s curiosity for trying new foods got the better of him and he ordered something called custard pudding. He had no idea what it was, but it sounded interesting. “I apologize for being so hasty, but we must go right after dinner.” Jewel explained. “Why must you leave in such a hurry? The night is young and…” Flora’s father was cut short by Jewel. “Our parents will be worried if we are gone too long, I really am sorry.” A brief time later the waitress came to them once again, but this time carrying a full plater of food. She set down one plate at a time and Oliver was the last to get his meal. Jewel and Oliver hadn’t eaten since last night’s dinner! He looked down at his food and thought it looked like cheesecake. He took an enormous bite and loved it. Although it tasted nothing like cheesecake…. Flora and her family obviously had much better manners than he and Jewel. Oliver was done eating his meal within a minute or two.

Once they were all done eating, Jewel and Oliver bid them farewell and thanked them for the meal. The two friends bolted out the door back onto the ship’s balcony. Oliver’s face was covered with an impatient look. “It is nine o’clock, we have less than five hours to get off this death trap! Our best way to survive is to use one of the ship’s lifeboats.” Oliver said sharply. She replied, “We have already tampered with the past enough. Taking a lifeboat could alter the future more than we think.” Oliver’s impatient expression faded into worry. He thought to himself, What else is there to do? Taking a lifeboat must be our only option?” “What you look for lies in plain sight.” “What did you say?” Oliver asked. “Nothing, why?” Said Jewel. “I heard a voice. It said, “What you look for lies in plain sight”.” “I think you ate too much custard pudding.” Jewel said with a chuckle.
