I'm not sure what I'm doing here with this map other than I wish to take inspiration from 19th century United States with their Industrial Revolution. Architechure at this point was very blended and varied. It was the age of Ragtime, Blues, Jazz, and big marching bands. It was also an age of terrible working conditions and major labor reform. It brought tremendous social change to the country as well. It is my hope to capture a sense of this time period.

Aside from listening to the music for inspiration, I'm also using .edu this website as a guideline:

http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/fnart/fa267/19house.html

My ultimate goal here with this project is to have a player friendly, and functional, map that isn't just a diaroma for viewing.

More will come soon! Thank you for taking the time to check this project out. As always, feedback and suggestions are welcome. Please read the update logs as I will try to explain there what I'm doing and why!

Update #1 : by ToadieOdie 10/09/2014 8:14:55 pmOct 9th, 2014

Realized that if I'm going by the premise of the contest's story line, there wouldn't be any older style building. Therefore I tore down the light keeper's house and rebuilt it using the Federalist's style from the 19th century. I did the same for the dock side warehouse, also using the Federalist style. The Federalist style was quite common in the 1800s but unfortunately they were mostly plain brick boxes for buildings. I tried to add detail to them without straying too far from the style.

Added player functional refinery, fueled by lava. If I can build a dragon, I plan to have one here melting stone into lava for effect. Also added a warehouse for the refinery.

Looking Geat.  some of the detailing and trimming is fresh.  The trapdoors around lights for instance.  I really love how you've considered the when, where, why and the planned and built.  Looking forward to more reaveal.

The docks are astethics, to help pull the eye to the edge of the island flowing into the start of the industrial area. I could see it being a problem if it was a 100x100 block dock with a bunch of buildings on it, or like 500 offshore oil rigs being a problem but this is harmless and not overdone, Shouldnt be a problem. And it looks great toadie wonderful start to your entry :) keep it up!

Yea I was told no off shore rigs but a boat and a dock is okay. I would like to have a cargo ship there but ship building has always been a challenge for me. Buuuuuut that is why I am entering.

I know next to nothing about steam punk except it's industrial revolution or wild west time period with a sci-fi/fantasy twist. So I figure I should focus on the roots before trying the twist. ;p

I guess his would be kind of expanding because it goes offshore by a lot, but im sure if the end of the dock is still touching the shore somewhere it might be okay.

Also... a lot of this is lacking detail and on your factory thing there isnt smokestacks...

Let me take this opportunity to clarify the rules.

The expansion of the island is not in the form of terrain, but in the form of a structure. I therefore think the marginal increase of the surface of the project is not a problem. One is pressumably allowed to build a boat if they wanted to, but i shall inquire and discuss if this rule needs further clarification.

That isn't a factory, it's housing by the dock. I haven't built a factory yet.

This is what the map looks like untouched in MCEdit from a bird's eye view:

This is what the map looks like now that I have built the dock on the shore. I will need to ask a judge if this is in violation of the rules and if it needs to be changed.

I didn't expand the island, I just built a dock on the shore of the island.
