History:
Although she is relatively young at just over 50, the Library of Pharos is one of the world's most important libraries and one of the largest open to the public. The construction began a short time of the regained independence of Egypt and the associated upswing of the now more single port city in the new empire. With the rising trade, plenty of gold flowed the city bags and the city grew at a breathtaking pace. Soon Pharos overtook the cities of "Ashgabad" and "Petarum" in size, prosperity and importance. As a result, the demands on the working population rose and, following the example of the young new republic of Rome, huge amounts of money were pumped into burgeoning education. To the south of the temple square, old buildings have been torn down and, with the help of Egyptian and Roman architects, a whole quarter have been rebuilt, with the purpose of providing a general education to the people. The library of Pharos stands in the center of this quarter and is surmounted only by the nearby sacral sanctuaries of the Temple Square. Due to its classic Roman structure, the building also looks significantly larger than it actually is; a deliberate delusion that should make people aware of the importance of this knowledge base.

Structural features:
As a basic template for the building was the model of the Egyptian library from the game 0AD, but I have made some changes, especially in terms of size. The construction roughly corresponds to the crossing of an ancient Greek temple with a Roman basilica, using sandstone instead of marble. There are a number of similar buildings from Ptolemaic Egypt and the subsequent period in the Roman Empire, where Egyptian-style Egyptian Roman buildings were built. Although this building does not correspond to a real one, it should consciously point to this period and could thus be called an Egyptian, Greek or Roman library. If you like, you can also rebuild the interior of the building; with a few simple steps you should be able to convert it into a temple, a thermal spa (Therma), a town hall (Curia) or a market hall (Basilica). An exchange of the sandstone by quartz and the red sandstone by bricks should be sufficient to transform the building into a Greco-Romanesque building.

Geschichte:

Obwohl sie mit knapp 50 Jahren relativ jung ist, ist die Bibliothek von Pharos eine den wichtigsten Bibliothek der Welt und eine der größten öffentlich zugängigen. Der Bau begann kurze Zeit der Wiedererlangten Unabhängigkeit von Ägypten und den damit verbundenen Aufschwung der nun mehr einzigen Hafenstadt im neuen Reich. Mit dem steigenden Handel floss reichlich Gold den Stadtsäckel und die Stadt wuchs in einem atemberaubenden Tempo. Schon bald überholte Pharos die Städte „Ashgabad“ und „Petarum“ in Größe, Wohlstand und Bedeutung. Damit stiegen auch die Anforderungen an die arbeitende Bevölkerung und es wurden - nach dem Vorbild der jungen neuen Republik Rom – Unmengen an Geld in die aufkeimende Bildung gepumpt. Südlich des Tempelplatzes wurden scharweise alte heruntergekommen Gebäude eingerissen und mit Hilfe von ägyptischen und römischen Architekten bin kurzer Zeit ein ganzes Viertel neu gebauten mit dem Zweck eine allgemeine Bildung dem Volke zukommen zu lassen. Die Bibliothek von Pharos steht dabei im Zentrum dessen und wird nur durch die nahen sakralen Heiligtümer des Tempelplatzes überragt. Durch ihren klassischen römischen Aufbau wirkt das Gebäude außerdem deutlich größer als es eigentlich ist; ein bewusste Täuschung, welche allen Leuten die Bedeutung dieses Wissenshorstes bewusstmachen soll.



Bauliche Merkmale:

Als grundsätzliche Vorlage für den Bau diente das Model der ägyptischen Bibliothek aus dem Spiel 0AD, allerdings ist habe ich insbesondere bezüglich der Größe einige Veränderungen durchgeführt. Der Bau entspricht in etwa der Kreuzung eines alt griechischen Tempels mit einer römischen Basilika, wobei statt Marmor Sandstein genutzt wurde. Es gibt einige ähnliche Bauwerke aus dem Ptolemäischen Ägypten und der anschließenden Zeit im römischen Kaiserreich, wo typtische römische Gebäude aus ägyptischen Materialien Gebaut wurden. Auch wenn dieses Gebäude keinem realen entspricht, so soll es doch bewusst auf diesen Zeitraum hindeuten und könnte somit als eine ägyptische, griechische oder römische Bibliothek bezeichnet werden. Wer mag kann das Gebäudeinnere auch gerne umbauen; mit einigen wenigen Handgriffen sollte man daraus auch ein Tempel, eine Therme, ein Rathaus oder eine Markthalle machen können. Ein Austausch des Sandsteines durch Quarz und des roten Sandsteines durch Ziegelsteine dürfe ausreichen, das Gebäude in ein graeco-romanisches Gebäude umzuwandeln.
