A new ship here is M/S Narvik. It is identical to Midnatsol, but lacks the panorama saloon. It has the original look before rebuilding She is also sister of M/S Midnatsol and M/S Vesterålen. It replaced the old Håkon Jarl, and put into service 18th December 1982. The most of the crew from Nordnorge switched over to the new one. In 1988, Ofotens and Vesteraalske was merged and the result was Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab. The autumn next year, Narvik sailed to Motorenwerke Bremerhaven, Germany, for rebuilding after Midnatsol and Vesterålen did so. It got a new section above the former cargo deck and a panorama saloon was added, and came back with new look 4th December 1989. In April 1991, Narvik ran aground at Lauvøya in Folla, but it almost sank, and was repaired at Fiskerstrand Verft. The three ships got renewed interior at Haugesund in 1995. In 2006, Hurtigruten Group ASA created after merger of OVDS and TFDS. In February 2007, Narvik arrived Bergen for last time, and the ship was sold to USKF and renamed Gann as school ship, to replace the ex-Ragnvald Jarl from 1956. The red stripe was painted blue. Its sister ship Lyngen (ex Midnatsol) was sold to Lindblad Expetions and rebuilt to cruiseship as National Geographic Explorer, and other sister Vesterålen are still sailing in Hurtigruten service!

The current Gann is the third former Hurtigruten ship to use as USKF's school ship, after D/S Finmarken from 1912 and M/S Ragnvald Jarl from 1956.
