Summit Mall

Summit Mall is a shopping mall that is located in area 5. The mall is a super-regional mall that opened in 1950 with anchors Krege, Sara Jones, and Belk. In 1960, Sara Jones went out of business and it became a Krege Men and Home, while the main store became a Krege Women and Children. In 1975, Belk closed and it was demolished for a center court, a new wing, and 2 new anchor stores, which are Montgomery Ward and May Company, due to the renaming of Krege, Krege Men and Home became the store's new name, Eagle Department Stores, while Krege Women and Children became JCPenney. In 1989, Eagle Department Stores went out of business and it was demolished for the 2nd center court and a new wing. In 1991, a food court, 2 new wings, and 2 new anchor stores were built, which are Lord & Taylor and Sears. In 1995, Lord & Taylor closed and it became a Saks Off 5th. In 1999, Saks Off 5th closed and it became a Kohl's. In 2001, Montgomery Ward went out of business and it became a Toys R Us, while May Company was converted into a Marshall Field's. In 2006, Marshall Field's was converted into a Macy's. In 2015, Kohl's closed. In 2016, Younkers remodeled and opened in the former Kohl's space. In June 2018, Toys R Us went out of business. In August 2018, Younkers closed due to the Bon-Ton going out of business. In 2019, a Dick's Sporting Goods/Golf Galaxy combo store took over most of the Toys R Us space, along with Ulta Beauty taking over the long-time empty restraunt space, and Spirit Halloween using part of the former Toys R Us space for the Halloween season. In March 2020, Sunny Bunnies by Gap Inc. opened reusing the former Younkers space. In March 2021, a 2-level area was built featuring new stores, 6 anchor stores, and 2 junior anchors, the anchor stores are Von Maur, Elder-Beerman, Dillard's, Saks Fifth Avenue (relocating from Lapis Mall), Nordstrom, and Belk, but only 1 junior anchor is open, which is Redline Superstore, Animal Mechanicals: Unicorn was going to open as the 2nd junior anchor but due to Williams-Sonoma selling the Animal Mechanicals brand to Unikitty LLC., the store did not open. In March 2022, Sunny Bunnies by Gap Inc. went out of business. Also in 2022, Round 1 opened in the space what was going to be Animal Mechanicals: Unicorn and Field & Stream opened in the former Sunny Bunnies by Gap Inc. space. In January 2023, Field & Stream closed due to the Dick's Sporting Goods/Golf Galaxy combo store being remodeled into a Dick's House of Sport, Ulta Beauty has to relocate as a result, with Planet Fitness opening 1 month later. In September 2023, the Field & Stream store will be demolished for a open-air shopping plaza called Summit Commons, which will include HomeGoods, Ross Dress for Less, Five Below, PetSmart, DSW, and ALDI. In 2026, the old Redline, the old Redline Kids, and the old Macy's store will be demolished for a 2-level wing featuring luxury brands on the 1st floor, and casual stores on the 2nd floor with a new Macy's store plus a Neiman Marcus and a Bloomingdale's. Summit Mall currently has 105 stores occupied and the mall does have a food court near Dick's.
