Nov 22, 2011
Made the necessary changes in order to comply with Minecraft 1.0
  • Replaced all glowstone under redstone broken by 1.0
  • Fixed items getting stuck in the collection chutes
  • removing glowstone enabled mob spawns in unwanted areas. fixed that too
  • For some reason the Orb no longer spawns Squid rendering the squid farm useless. However, It may serve as a collection area if fences are ever made to let items pass through
  • I added an observation deck at the grinder level and a few other minor tweeks you may or may not notice.

One of my most popular traps has been modernized! The original Orb project was an early attempt at an ultra high output mob trap. The focus was design and architecture with the bonus being high drop output.


The Orb version 2 takes the design and architecture even further while nearly doubling the drop rate. Not long ago, there was a fellow redditor who noticed Squids were the only thing that survived The Orb. I got a tickle out of that so, I decided version 2 would have to succeed in containing and harvesting Squid ink. I also wanted to add a Master On/Off switch and a way to revive glitched pistons. Success! My objectives were met and this trap turned out to be the Lamborghini of Mob Traps! IMHO :D


I also included enough supplies hidden in the planetoids around The Orb to build a Minecart bridge. This way the folks who really want to use all the drops can build their way to freedom. I was going to call this The Orb challenge but, I'm pretty sure I put way more than enough supplies to get across the void.


Q: Why does The Orb look so Orby?
A: The circumference of The Orb is exactly 360 blocks. One block for every degree of a perfect circle.

I really like the mix of a mob trap and kind of a design.
Most of the mob traps are just a huge stone block with the technical stuff in it.
But you, I must say, let it look quite nice :)

squids require stationary water to spawn so u need a piston thing to make the water move and also spawners to make them spawn more...

Hey i recently downloaded the orb and mine seems to have an issue with the switchs and the redstone wire popping off the glowstone any idea how to fix it?

Yea, redstone doesn't stick to glowstone anymore. I'll have to do an update but, I just got back from MINECON so, it will be a day or two :)

Right now I'm playing through Super Hostile #8 on my YouTube channel. The Enderman present an interesting challenge as far as trapping goes and their drops are pretty useful now. That might be the direction I'm heading :)

hey though great job on your traps! ive downloaded ALL of them and they ALL amaze me  :D sadly i have a laptop so i can only observe :( if i get too cloes then it laggs crazy lol

Thanks Jaso444! As far as a mob trap that's small (a few stories) is concerned, yes but, you'd have to spread out horizontally to keep a high output rate.

I'm not an expert in projects at all (however I should get around to trying one) but what I really love about this project is the automatic feel of it with the redstone. Most mob traps basically just have a huge, dark building with mob spawners with water sources leading them to a lava death. What I love about this one is you're using pistons to kill mobs and receive goodies. Subbed, even though like I said I'm not big into projects, yours just stands out. I realize you aren't the first to use this mechanism but something about yours just makes it pop. Keep up the good work ML32.

This has made me a bit happier, my trident mob trap glitched out, all but 1 of the modules has perm light in it with no source.

Hmm... that's definitely weird. Did you try placing blocks in the areas with lighting errors? Sometimes I get the same thing when using SPC's "light" command. Placing blocks in the effected chunks usually helps :)

spent an hour doing that, my modules were blocked off between each 1/3 so it took a while, the I logged out and back in and it came back. :l - I don't think it matters anyway, gonna need to make a better version to deal with endermen.
