Welcome to today's tutorial, brought to you by Dingo and Infini Garde!
Ever joined a server, and wanted to be a moderator on it? Well, you've come to the right place! Read on, oh dear Reader, and find out how you might achieve your desire to one day be a mod on a server.
TiP: This tutorial is for people who fantasize about getting moderator status on their favorite server. If that isn't you, I have some other tutorials that might interest you HERE and HERE. ;)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No. No, no, no, no, no! Never, ever, EVER ask for op right when you join a server. If you do, you will narrow your chances of getting it down to zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada!
On that topic, you should never ask for moderator status either. Or even ask how to get it. That is what this tutorial will give you tips on how to do. Don't even mention that you might want to be a
mod
.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Keep this in mind: not all servers even want more moderators. If the slots for mods are all full, then that server will most likely not accept you as a mod. This will probably be the case on very popular servers that already have a great team of mods to keep the players in line.
On that note, other servers might be looking for mods. They may even have a 'moderator
application form.' Even so, don't apply yet (if you just joined). Wait a while. Get to know current players, lend a hand to newbies, never ever ever break any of the rules, and help out the staff (for example, report players who break the rules and/or grief). Don't be a suck up, though (praise the server, be a mini-mod, etc.). That'll just get others jealous/mad at you, and may put the staff off. One BIG thing that will definitely put the staff off: your grammar.
Be sure to talk a lot in chat! Just staying silent and private messaging the staff a lot won't make them notice you. They probably will be getting tons of messages from other players, too.
Become a well-known player on the server, and their forums. If they have a forum, that is. Stay up to date on all the server news and possible rule changes.
So, you were promoted, you say? Well congratulations! You now have a very difficult job. ;)
Hurry and blow those candles out, because you have a tough job ahead of you! A job filled with mercilessness, fatigue, and late-nights.
And fun too, don't forget that!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now that your dream has become reality, you have power. And, as we all know, with great power comes great responsibility. Don't abuse your newfound power by letting it go to your head. That would totally undo all your hard work getting to this point! Plus, you would lose any trust the owner/admins may have ever had in you, and probably never get to mod status again. Or worse: you might get banned.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most servers have similar rules regarding when to mute, jail, kick, and ban players. Consult the following table regarding when each scenario is acceptable:
NB: This chart may not apply on all servers. Be sure to consult the server rules, too!
I think you're ready, young padawan. Go out into the wide world of Minecraft servers, and find one you like. Try these tips out, and who knows, maybe I'll see you one day as a mod on a server.
