Alright, this is the season finale for D&D Club season 1! Why? Because we won't be playing again until September (some people are going to camp for the summer, others may be spending parts of the break out-of-state). Now, just a note, the events you're about to read about took place yesterday (Wednesday, June 14th, 2023), but I couldn't write the story last night like I normally do, so I'm doing it today. (And right after, I have to write the last School Story until September, and then work on PMC: Apocalypse chapter 6.) Anyways, in this session, we had downtime and then some crazy sheet happened. Enjoy!

After briefly stopping at a nearby record store to look around, me and my dad continued on our way to Duncan's, getting there 10 minutes before the session began. Grayson was already there, and after I said goodbye to my dad, I joined him in Duncan's room, where I watched the two of them play Conflict of Nations. Julia arrived a few minutes before the session was supposed to start, and Isaac a few minutes after 3, when we were supposed to start. Gage came in with him and we started a little late because he needed to set everything up. Still, it was good to be back after missing the last session because I was grounded. Gage gave Duncan a late birthday gift in the form of a hand-painted fairy miniature for his character. (He's going to give us miniatures of our characters on our birthdays.)

The Cast
From one head of the table and clockwise, here’s our cast of characters:

Me (Gaél) as Dragus, a black Dragonborn wizard who often stays behind to cast ranged spells like Firebolt, Magic Missile, and Fireball from afar without taking damage from the people we’re fighting, but lately, I have been getting more involved in combat.

Grayson as Ash, an Aasimar rogue who is extremely lucky, which is perfect, since he always ends up being in situations where he comes close to death, such as when he was in the belly of a roper and when a table came to life and crushed his ribs, which almost killed him in one blow.

Julia as Blaze, an Elf ranger armed with a bow, and who usually does most of the fighting alongside Henry, and who's pretty helpful to us.

Gage as the Dungeon Master, which is pretty self-explanatory, but for those who don’t know, he plays all of the NPCs and explains the story.

Isaac as Henry, a half-Orc (I still don't know his class), the other one who does most of the fighting, which makes sense, since he has the most of health out of all of us.

Duncan as Aven, a Fairy sorcerer, who we don’t know much about, except that he’s 2’ tall and knows a lot of spells. He usually flies out of trouble when we get into it.

Remember, I use the characters' real names when talking about them, and the characters' name when talking about the game.

Gage didn't give us a recap, but I already knew that we killed the two frost giants that attacked us in the woods last session and returned to Mirabar. Today, we began downtime. Gage explained the rules of downtime to us and then gave us 15 minutes to decide how we'd be living and what each of us wanted to do. We agreed that we would live comfortably in an inn for 5 weeks, and spent 35 gold to do it. Then, we sold our gems for a good amount of gold pieces, which I then divided up amongst us using the magical device known as a calculator. Gage also gave us a list of items for sale at Mercer's shady magic item market, in case anyone was considering buying a magic item. Then, we began our downtime adventures

Gage went through the list of activities, asking if anyone was doing one as he went through the pages of the DM's guide. When he asked if anyone was buying a magic item, Blaze said she wanted to find a Quiver of Anariel. (I think that's what it was called, but I forgot.) Gage proceeded to play Mercer in a roleplay conversation between them, saying he would look into it. A few moments later, he returned with news that he had a contact in the south who could get it to her sometime during our 5 week stay here in Mirabar. In the meantime, he offered Blaze 5 differently-colored magical beans, which she bought. Aven later came into the shop looking for Eyes of Charming. Mercer said he had a contact in the south who may be able to find them, and returned a few moments later bearing bad news: the contact couldn't find them. He offered the saddened Aven some other magical items from the store, but the fairy simply left.

Gage then asked if anyone wanted to craft a magical item, and I spoke up. I didn't know what I wanted to craft, though, but Duncan asked me to craft Eyes of Charming, so I did. One day, I sat down in a pub with Aven, who told me about his bad luck looking for the Eyes, and he didn't know I was working on making them. (In-game, I didn't know Aven wanted Eyes of Charming, and was just coincidentally making them.) Meanwhile, Ash wanted to be an assassin, but that meant a life of crime, which he didn't want to do, so he just decided to do something else (which I forgot). Henry cast a spell of greater restoration on himself to undo the effects of the aging spell he encountered in the dwarven mines, and, with his young strength back (and his old wiseness gone), he got a job in the mines, earning the nickname "Henry Iron" for his heroic acts in the caves.

On our last night staying in the inn, we all met up at the pub for a drink, discussing what to do next. Gage described this part as the "Quest Select" screen you see in video games. Blaze had heard about a "Dungeon of Death" in dwarven mine with a necrotic curse, which, aside from the fact that we literally just did that, did not sound fun. Someone else (who I'm forgetting) heard about a society for villains forming outside of the city, and we had a few other quest options. I forgot what quest we chose, however, because of what happened next.

We went out into the wilderness and set up a campfire. Nearby, Blaze decided to plant one of the beans (with our permission), planting the red and green one. It grew into a giant version of herself, which started heckling us, telling us we were losers (the voice Gage did for this giant was hilarious and perfect for her character) and telling the monsters where we were. It drove us crazy! Then, she thought it was a good idea to plant the gold bean further away, and a giant pyramid rose from the ground, with piles upon piles of gold and treasure inside, as well a chest. She thought it was a good idea to go inside the pyramid, which caused a mummy lord to spawn. (A Mummy Lord's Lair, according to page of the DM guide that I saw Gage reading from when he stood up.)

Blaze and Ash then began fighting the mummy lord and his minions, who closed in on them at the entrance. Aven flew away, presumably to find help in the dark of the night and to stay safe, and me and Henry moved closer to pyramid entrance to help out but not get attacked ourselves. Meanwhile, two mysterious hooded figures were drawn to our campfire by the giant version of Blaze (that continued to heckle us, but Gage didn't do the dialogue because he was focused on the pyramid situation). They began betting on our success or failure. (C-3PO voice) How rude.

During this battle, a bunch of bad stuff happened. For starters, the mummy lord cast some sort of spell that made us feel dry and dehydrated, and prevented me from casting spells, which I learned when I tried to cast Fireball in the direction of one of the mummies. He also summoned a horde of scarabs that made this fight a whole lot harder. He hit Henry with something that caused his skin to dry out and crack a little bit on his face, where the wound was. Then, one of the mummies almost killed Blaze, and she nearly fell on the floor tile near the entrance that would trigger an explosion, but Julia got a high roll and her character fell the other way. This prompted Aven to fly in above the sandstorm the mummy lord had created and cast Lightning Bolt, hitting the mummy that nearly killed Blaze. Ash then retreated to the shelter of a tree outside of the cloud of sand and scarabs, and Aven shouted at the hooded figures to help us, but they nodded "No" and went back to betting on us.

Things were going to end soon, thankfully, because Henry was doing a ton of damage to the mummy lord. Sadly, this came at a cost, as the undead king cast another spell on him that caused him to crumble to dust! Yes, that's right, we lost another member of the party! (Duncan's old character, Nox, was the first, back in season 1, episode 5.) After this, I delivered what I remember to be the killing blow on the mummy lord when I was finally able to cast a spell, using Spell Sniper to see through the sandstorm and cast Firebolt in his direction and killing him. As the sand fell to the ground around us, we looked into the pyramid (and I briefly yelled at Blaze) and saw the treasures within. Gage also told us that among the treasures was a windfan (which Blaze was considering buying in Mercer's store while she waited for the Quiver to arrive) and Wings of Flying. Then, he said we'd resume this story in September and told us to have a good summer.

And, with that, D&D Club season 2 is done and the series is on hiatus on September, when we'll meet again. My first D&D campaign has been really fun, and it's honestly surprising that I was considering not accepting Duncan's invitation to join back in December. I hope you enjoyed this series and I hope you continue to enjoy it! Also, remember not to plant suspicious beans you bought off a shady merchant. (By the way, Isaac's next character is going to be a Paladin.)

This reminds me of my friends' Gloomhaven game. They had the option to shoot a white bird to restore some health and hunger, so they did. Next morning, they had the option to shoot some red birds. They took it. Small problem: they weren't birds. They were dragons, just really far away.
