How do you download mods, and also what programs and files you need to have. Are you wanting to install mods or download them so you can edit?

If you are wanting to install some, are you on a mac or a windows machine?

Well this is a tutorial for basic mods.

First your going to need winrar which you probably should have. Anyways, download the mod you want and then go to %appdata%/.minecraft/bin and right click "Minecraft.jar" and then chose "Open with Winrar" and then put all the files from the mod into the minecraft.jar and then delete 'Meta-INF' folder then start minecraft.

I don't have minecraft.jar

It might just be named minecraft, but its a jar file
