This is going to tell you how to shade skins.
First what I use is MCSkin3D. It is free all you need to do is go to this http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/746941-mcskin3d-new-skinning-program-update-14/.
It didn't work after awhile but to fix that instead of running it just run it as administrator and it will work.
Once you have it open you will need to draw a skin. It can be anything just draw one. After that you may see the noise adding tool. Do not use it because it will mess up the shading. Make sure that your skin is a good nice bright but still not to dull. Then you will need to get the dodge/burn tool at the tool tabs. Don't use the darken/lighten unles you don't want the shading to show up that much but either way the same rules that come next will apply. After you get the tool set it to any number but once you choose one you will leave it the same. I usually use anywhere from 85 to 100 because that is just what I thinks looks best. Once you get the number you want just find a spot on the area that you will be shading and click once and it should get darker. If it gets brighter that means at the top were you changed your number it will have dodged marked. All you need to do is change that to burn and then do it again. After you have that spot double click around it but not diagonal. All the blocks(pixels) should be touching but not diagonal. Then do the same thing around those but with 3 clicks. If you need to see a video of it click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6Hrtuc4O48. For an example click here.
