Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. There are legends of the time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads.

All that changed when Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos was freed from his prison as a result of a war started among the nations.
As a result, Vaatu pushed the four nations apart and forced them to live in total darkness.

To compensate for this, the lion turtle spirit decided to grant each person a bending ability, in hope of redeeming themselves and bringing light to the world.
