Personally, I love chess but is not all about instinct. Moves have to be calculated and chosen ahead of your current go. Skill has to be gained and the only way is practise. Chess.com does have a few hints on how to play, but I repeat that actually playing against someone helps even more. If you are in a learning mood, ask somebody who you know will beat you because they are much better than you. Every time I do this, I concentrate on both my moves and theirs to see how they are beating me. Then I apply these tactics on my friends >:)
