"Failed to login: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">" on old servers.

I tried starting an alpha server that I had downloaded, but when I connected, I got the error message "Failed to login: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">". I found a fix, which was to turn off online mode on the server, but then I won't be able to play with friends. Is there any other fix?
Edit: I found out that I can still play with friends without the online mode, but the server isn't as secure.

Which Server do u like to start? The DOCTYPE... is the head of an HTML-Page.
Please give us your specifications like MC-Version, Server [Windows/Linux/etc.].
