Local multiplayer not working since update

I've always been able to connect to my niece and nephews phones, except after one previous version which got patched. Yet again, neither my galaxy exhibit nor my new Note 3 can connect to the galaxy a 4G nor the galaxy 2. Maybe it's the older phones or is anyone else experiencing this issue?
