Can't mine on my server.

I plan to host a server someday but for now i'm practicing learning everything i can. but for now i can login on my server on this PC but I couldn't break anything.
I tried /help or /? but nothing happens. I searched the internet and forums and found no answer.
can anyone help me?

open up your minecraft folder and find the server.properties. Right click and select edit, there should be an option to reduce the spawnprotection size.
However, I suggest you move away from spawn and try breaking first and then try adding you in game name to the ops.txt second before you bother trying to edit the server.properties file.

If you make yourself an 'op' you can dig near the spawn

If you are too close to spawn, blocks cannot be broken. Try moving further away.
Or change the server.properties file to reduce the spawn protection.
Or add your IGN to ops.txt to give yourself operator privileges.
