Low FPS with a slightly dated computer

I am using a I7 920 2.67 ghz processor with a Nvidia 750 TI 2GB OC and I have 8GB of ram, however I noticed that I've been getting low FPS.
However this wasn't always the case with my PC MC used to run perfectly but one day I got on to play and I found that my FPS had gone to like 5 fps, I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to be working, Allocating ram does nothing, Optifine doesn't do anything, and a reinstall of Java has done nothing.
Any suggestions what I could try?
