Minecraft Stops working when joining my server.

Hi, a friend of mine has been hosting a server but can no longer keep hosting it so we decided to move it to my "server" pc. I can not port forward 25565 because of some unknown reason, any other port works fine. So i changed it to 24957 or w/e and everyone can see the server. But when we join our minecraft stops responding.
Literally the only change is the port. Any ideas?

Oh crap I thought i wrote responding, which is what i meant.

that happens to me every now and then when loading into a modded world or modded server with lots going on, if minecraft doesnt recover within 20 seconds or so then i would say to backup the server world and see if its the world causing issues

No well, it works when my friends hosts it. Literally all we did was: Zip the server folder, send it over, Unzip, Change port, start.

all i can think of is some sort of firewall issue then
