I agree with azie; I think old graphic cards cannot read the new blocks/enitites, etc.Try finding a new graphics card or call a computer service thing :)

and I know this cause I know someone else who has an old graphic card

Typically this means you need to update your graphics driver. If your card is really old, it may no longer be supported though.

That also kinda of depends on your operating system, but we'll see if this helps.
On most Windows versions, you can check which one you're running by right clicking your "My PC" shortcut on your desktop or by opening your file browser and right clicking the "My PC"/"This PC" icon on the left and clicking "Properties". It'll list some info about your computer and your OS should be listed near the top.
If you're not using Windows though, I don't know how to find that info on other operating systems.
