Haven't done mod since Beta1.8 - What do I need to know?

Last time I did a mod was back in Beta 1.8, it's been a while. I'm starting to get back into minecraft again and will be doing more mods. I was wondering if anyone can update me on things I might need to know such as
- Is MCP still being used?
- Is ModLoader still being used?
- Any need-to-know changes that might come in handy

MCP Is still being used, Modloader is also still being used, but I and many others recommend using MinecraftForge. Quite a few new functions have been added, but there are plenty of tutorials.
