If you're into automation, Buildcraft, IC2, Thermal Expansion, Steve's Carts, Steve's Factory Manager, and JABBA would be some good mods to start with.

As for magic, Thaumcraft, Boatania, Witchery, and Ars Magica 2 are pretty reputable.

Some other good mods would be NEI, Morph, Carpenter's Blocks, Optifine, Tropicraft, Weather, Too Much TNT, Lycanite's Mobs, and Flan's Mod along with some of its addons.

You may also want to try some more obscure mods as well. You should try to search through the Minecraft Forums, PMC Forums, Curse, or some other mod hosting site to see what you can find.

If you want a modpack based around a map, like Crash Landing for example, Hardcore Questing Mode and Custom NPCs would be some good additions.

Depending on what you want to do, you may want to add Orespawn, but it's been done several times in other modpacks.

There are also several mods that improve aesthetics, such as Optifine, Chisel, Chisel 2, and Better Foliage.

It's also important to get the modder's permission before adding in their mod(s) if necessary.

I hope that this helps

Botania, Thermal Expansion, EnderIO, Blood Magic, Doggy Talents, Optifine, Shaders, VoxelMap, BetterClouds, AutoFish, and NEI are only some of my favorite mods but there are a whole lot of mods out there. Possibly more than 500K? This really depends on you.

If you want to make a good modpack you'll have to put good mods in it, and not just install every mod you can find on the internet.
If you have various ore processing mods in your pack it's a good idea to use AOBD.

Don't put orespawn in it.
SmileycorpMCModpacks don't really work, unless they have a theme, what kind of Modpack are you going for?

As long as you properly configure everything using mods such as minetweaker, you can make it work.

Glacticraft maybe? I have Mo' Creatures and Pixelmon right now. All are really good mods.

A good base mod is DivineRPGCraft, OreSpawn is cool too, but it has been used a lot and is not the best really. Aether or Aether II are cool too. A random list: Tropicraft, Skyrim mod, Thaumcraft, Ars Magica, Tale of Kingdoms, Take of Kingship, Minecraft Comes Alive, Twilight Forest, Lycanite's Mobs, Totally Awesome RPG, Mo' Creatures, MystiCraft, Dungeon Pack and Pixelmon.

Hopefully that will get it started for ya. :p

It depends, do you want a "theme" with your modpack or do you just want random mods?
