I'm working on a texture pack based on the area where I live (similar plants, colors, etc.) and I realized that all of my wooden planks are really light--there's no dark wood. Rather than changing one (which I really don't want to do), I thought maybe changing the nether brick into dark wooden planks would fix this problem. What do you think? Should Nether Brick become dark Wooden Planks, or should I do something else?

Alright, I tried changing the spruce wood instead to something more "aged". What do you guys think?

Try to avoid replacing blocks with anything other than what they are intended for if you want your pack to be used for survival and not just building.

I think you're right about that. I think that players would appreciate having a darker wood, though, and there are no dark woods in the area I'm basing the pack on.
