XBOX ONE CONTROLLER NOT WORKING ON MY PC

Hello, I am new to this whole thing so maybe someone can give me some guidance. I just downloaded the most recent version of Minecraft PC and I HATE using the keyboard because I'm used to the XBOX one controller. I plugged it in and the drivers are installed and the controller technically works (I can test it) but it does not work with Minecraft at all. Any ideas on what I can do? According to what I read online it's supposed to just work automatically if you have Windows 10, which I do. I'm stumped. Thanks in advance for your help!

The version I have I downloaded directly from the Minecraft.net site and it's version 1.12, is that not the Windows 10 version?

That is Java Edition. Windows 10 Edition is found on the Microsoft Store.

Java Edition has no controller support. If you'd like to play the game with a controller, you'll need Windows 10 Edition, which you can get for free by redeeming a license key found on your Mojang account page.
