The 'pep rally' intended purpose is to whip up support for the local sports collective prior to a (presumptively) important contest, although this is typically done only for the so-called 'money' sports [​typically football & basketball at the high school level {students aged 14-18}].

Typical features are music, the leading of chants, 'inspirational' speeches by coaches and/or school administratiors, and performances by the cheerleaders (usually dance / acrobatics).

As a practical matter, it is a way of wasting a school day as either some classes are canceled or all periods are shortened. In addition, the 'festivities' are generally used as an excuse by students to goof-off/skive-off.
