Although it is commonly referred to as a dragonfly, it is in fact only distantly related to that species and instead belongs to the order Meganisoptera
It had a total wingspan of 28 inches (~70 cm) and a body length of about 17 inches (~43 cm)
Five years after its discovery in 1880, this insect was named by Charles Brongniart
