Derived from the successful T-33 Shooting Star, the Lockheed F-94 Starfire was a new class of aircraft. Intended to replace the P/F-80 in Korea, Lockheed's new F-94 designed as an all-weather day/night interceptor aircraft, and had many technological firsts. The F-94 had many improvements over the T-33, utilizing a large radar (hence the enlarged nose), an advanced automatic fire control system, and was the first US jet fighter to use an afterburner. Introduced into service in 1950, and removed in 1958, the Starfire was quickly superseded by more advanced designs, a common occurrence at this time in aircraft development.
