The USS Juneau was the second ship of the Atlanta Class Light Cruisers and was build in Kearny, NJ. Juneau would enter service on the 14th of Febuary 1942 but wouldn't see action till September later that year. Juneau was sent to Guadalcanal along with the battleship USS South Dakota to reinforce to faltering fleet, Juneau would perform aa operations alongside the USS Wasp untill the Wasp's sinking 15 September, 1942. Juneau would then serve next to the USS Hornet and repel Japanese attacks at the Battle of The Santa Cruz Islands where she would help rescue survivors of the USS Hornet. Juneau would return to port but set out again under the command of Rear Admiral Richmond K. Turner. This battle would prove disasterous for the Juneau as during the battle she would be struck by a Japanese torpedo which fractured her keel, the following day Juneau would suffer a second torpedo strike while attempting to return to port, this torpedo would detonate the forward amunition stores causing a devastating explosion. Juneau would sink in just 20 seconds, shortly after passing under the surface another large explosion in the water raised the Juneau's hull momentarily to the surface before sinking again, the cause of the explosion is believed to be from the boilers. Sailors aboard the heavily damaged San Fransisco would again be peppered with shrappnel, this time from their own ship. The choice to search for survivors was deemed too risky so so the San Fransisco and the Helena would continue onward. The search for survivors wouldn't begin for days after the battle but at that point it was too late, only 10 sailors survived the sinking of the USS Juneau, 115 survived the initial explosion but they were soon picked off by shark attacks. The Sinking of the Juneau would resonate with the American people because of the 5 Sullivan Brothers lost in the event. The Sullivan Brothers' deaths would inspire an order which stated that brothers could not serve in the same regiment or ship so something similar wouldn't happen again. Juneau's wreck was discovered in 2018 by Paul Allen resting 1,800ft below the surface in many large peieces.
