The destroyer was laid in 1988 at Zhdanov Shipyard No 190 (now called Severnaya Verf Shipyard) in Leningrad with the name of Besstrashny; launched in 1991; commissioned in 1993. Since 2004 the destroyer is known as Admiral Ushakov, side numer 434.
Admiral Ushakov is one of the 8 remaining Projet 956 Sarych destroyers in VMFRF (Russian Navy), The NATO name for the vessels of this class is Sovremennyy-class from the first ship , it is the principal anti-surface warship of the Russian Navy. The Soviet designation for the class was Project 956 Sarych (Buzzard).
The primary role of this guided missile destroyer is to attack enemy warships while also providing sea and air defense for warships and transports under escort. It complements the Udaloy-class destroyers in anti-submarine operations.
