Originally, the ship was the HMS Crusader, a C-Class Destroyer built for the Royal Navy, before being sold to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1938. She served in the Battle of the Atlantic as a convoy escort during the Second World War (WW2). However, she was sunk by German U-Boat U-91 on Sept. 14th, 1942.
The paint scheme is the one shown at the Halifax Citadel, where a model of the ship is located in one of the museums.
