HMS, USS, or even HIJMS, are all simply designations telling what navy the ship belongs to.
For instance, All US Navy ships are designated USS (United States Ship)
All Royal Navy Vessels are designated HMS (His/Her Majesty's Ship)
HIJMS is commonly used by american historians to designate Japanese ships before 1945
(His Imperial Japanese Majesty's Ship)
