NYCCOne, standing for One New York City Campus, is the main American campus of the Imperial University, a university founded and headquartered in St.Petersburg, Russia.
Having been built for a university, on Broadway, in front of Union Square meant the building had to stand out. To communicate the purpose of the building, I have included many cultural references, at various levels of architectural understanding. One of the most immediately identifiable of these references are the statues, which depict a very chiseled, perfected male figure. This perfection of the male figure nods to the Age of Enlightenment, in which the idea of progress, and even perfection was held as one of the greatest characteristics of humanity. Of course most schools have this period to thank for their operations. The next reference is specific to New York City, and is seen specifically on the Alumni Hall building. It is to St.Paul’s chapel. The spire at the top of the Alumni Hall building resembles, abstractly, the spire of St.Paul’s chapel. In a way, the alumni worthy enough to be recognized in this building are like saints to The Church. The last significant reference, is to the Hagia Sophia, whose name translates to “holy wisdom.” References to the building are found at the east and west ends of the building, in which the structural supports of the cathedral are repurposed into both symbols of the structure of the university, and fire escapes. An additional reference can be found at the very top of the building, which has a dome, similar to the Hagia Sophia itself.
