ST-I or CT-I as in russian, was a heavy tank project of the soviet in ww2. The development of the tank began in 1945 by Valentin Asikritovich Ganin, who later became a famous rocket engineer. The development was also attended by a graduate of the Moscow State Technical University. N.E.Bauman Chasovnikov. As a chassis, it was planned to use a similar one from the Object 701 (after being modified by the IS-4 ), and the tower was designed by Ganin himself. He believed that the existing heavy tanks have a number of shortcomings both in the turret and in the hull, and to solve them, he proposed a number of innovations.


In the direction of finalizing the hull, Ganin set himself the goal of increasing the reliability of the tank's equipment (adapting it for use under water), optimizing the diameter of the rollers and the location of the track chain. The tower was supposed to be sealed as much as possible (in case the tank needed to wade through a water obstacle), combine the main gun with two machine guns or small-caliber cannons, optimize the crew position and increase the tank's ammunition by increasing the pocket in the rear of the tower. Additionally, add a cannon stabilizer, an electric / hydraulic turret traverse drive, install an anti-aircraft machine gun, increase the number of hatches to three, as well as a number of significant innovations.

Project ST-II
Also, the ST-II project was created, which was distinguished by the installation of two identical guns, which made it possible to make the most of all the innovations of the already extremely rapid-fire ST-I tank.
